If for some people the problem is how to trap love and contain it, for others it is how to make their love bear fruit. For some time Filippo and his wife had given up on erotic games; indeed, quite some time had passed since the last time they had had intercourse, but finally they had a common goal.

Fil and Teri came out of the medical laboratory arm in arm. Their legs felt like jelly after the zealous nurses in white jackets had taken a huge amount of blood for the routine tests and genetic checks that were necessary to have the strongest guarantees of conceiving a healthy child. They had also asked Fil for a sample of seminal fluid to analyze, and of the two he was definitely the most distracted.

“Would you like a nice breakfast at the bar? We’ve earned it, haven’t we?” Fil broke the silence and squeezed his wife’s hand to attract her attention.

“Mmm,” she said laconically.

“You seem thoughtful,” noted Fil, aware that perhaps “thoughtful” wasn’t the right adjective; “pissed off” was rather better.

“I was thinking that taking care of the puppies and at the same time conceiving a baby will be difficult . . . ”

“So we’ll sell a couple of puppies and just keep the one you like best.” Sometimes Fil was worried about his wife’s vacuous comments. He knew her well; they had shared five years of marriage and two before that when they were engaged. He kept on telling himself that every time, as a psychotherapist, he came up with a fitting diagnosis for her. “And you’ll see it’ll be natural . . . having a child, I mean.”

They went into the bar and Teri sat down impatiently, continually checking her watch. Fil noticed her restlessness despite being busy enjoying a filled croissant and an extravagant cappuccino.

“Do you have an appointment?” he asked her, because he really couldn’t imagine what she could possibly have to do. She had been to the hairdresser two days before and the re-doing of her nails was marked down for the following week on the calendar.

“To be honest, yes. I have to see a possible owner for one of our puppies.” Teri seemed to weigh up syllable by syllable everything that came out of her beautiful mouth. She barely touched the steaming cup of tea with her lips before setting it down again on the saucer without having taken even a sip. “It’s a guy who lives in town, not far from here. He can certainly wait a few minutes.” Teri smiled and looked her husband unflinchingly in the eye while with a foot she pushed under the table the bag that was hopping about to the rhythm of the ringing of her cell phone.
